Clopay Roller Replacement: The Van Nuys Owner’s Guide

Clopay roller replacement in Van Nuys typically runs $110-$220 installed, and we stock the common sizes on every truck. Most jobs are finished in under an hour. You’ll know the rollers are going when the door starts grinding, shaking, or binding in the tracks.

We’ve replaced rollers on Clopay doors across the Valley for over four decades. The dry Van Nuys climate is harder on nylon rollers than people expect. The heat cycles the bearings through expansion and contraction, and after ten or fifteen years the rollers simply don’t roll anymore. They slide. That sliding wears the track, strains the opener, and eventually the door hangs up completely. Carl Dutton, our owner, learned the mechanical side of this trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, where he came to understand that springs and cables don’t forgive shortcuts. The same applies to rollers. The door should open. Let’s make sure it does.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay uses several roller configurations across their product lines, and matching the right one matters. The Classic Collection and Gallery Series steel doors typically ship with 2-inch diameter nylon rollers with a 4-inch stem length. The Canyon Ridge and Coachman carriage-house lines sometimes use heavier-duty 2-inch steel rollers with sealed ball bearings to handle the extra panel weight. The Avante modern glass and aluminum doors use a narrower 1-3/4 inch roller with a shorter stem.

You can identify your roller by pulling the release cord on the opener and manually raising the door to the halfway point. The roller is the wheel that rides inside the vertical track on each side of the door. Count the rollers: a standard 7-foot door has ten, a 16-foot wide double has twelve. Check the stem for a stamped number, or measure stem length from the roller center to the end. We carry Clopay-compatible rollers from Precision and DURA-LIFT that match OEM specs. Mainspring Garage Door Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Clopay. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie systems.

Signs Your Clopay Roller Replacement Is Failing

  • The door shakes or vibrates when moving. Worn roller bearings develop flat spots or lose lubrication. Instead of rolling smoothly through the track curve, the wheel catches and releases repeatedly, sending vibration through the entire door.
  • You hear grinding or squealing from the track area. Nylon rollers shed material as they age. Once the bearing is exposed, metal rubs on metal. The sound is unmistakable, and it means the roller is chewing into the track steel.
  • The door binds or stalls at the horizontal curve. The transition from vertical to horizontal track is where rollers work hardest. A swollen or cracked roller can wedge in the curve, especially on Clopay’s wider 16-foot doors where the center panels sag slightly under their own weight.
  • One side of the door hangs lower than the other. When a roller seizes completely, that corner of the door drags. The opener strains, cables go out of balance, and the problem cascades to other components if you keep running it.
  • Roller wobble visible from outside. A healthy roller sits centered in the track. When the bearing wears, the wheel tilts and the stem bangs against the track edge. You can see this from the driveway on a sunny Van Nuys morning.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range in Van Nuys
Roller Replacement (per door, standard nylon) $110-$160
Roller Replacement (heavy-duty steel/sealed bearing) $160-$220
Track inspection and minor alignment Included
Opener force limit check Included

The price range reflects roller grade and door size. Standard nylon rollers with 10,000-cycle ratings suit most Van Nuys homeowners. Sealed-bearing steel rollers rated for 50,000 cycles cost more upfront but last through decades of daily use. We quote the flat price before any work begins. No surprises on the bill. Every roller replacement carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If a roller fails or the door doesn’t run right, we come back at no charge. No paperwork to file, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect your own rollers. With the door closed and the opener disconnected, look for cracked nylon, rust on steel rollers, or a roller that doesn’t spin freely by hand. What you should not do is remove a roller while the door is under spring tension. The bottom roller bracket is attached to the lift cable, and that cable is under hundreds of pounds of force from the torsion spring. A slipped wrench here can cause serious injury.

Replacing middle rollers on a manually-lowered door is within reach of a careful homeowner with the right tools. Replacing bottom rollers, or any roller on a door with a broken spring, belongs to a trained technician. We carry the correct roller sizes for every Clopay series on our trucks. Most Van Nuys jobs are finished in a single visit. Call (747) 836-1998 for a free estimate.
