Craftsman Roller Replacement: The Van Nuys Owner’s Guide

Craftsman roller replacement in Van Nuys typically runs $110-$220 installed, and we stock the common sizes on every truck. Most jobs are finished in under an hour, same day you call. You’ll know the rollers are going when the door starts sounding like a freight car on a rough track, or when it shudders and sticks halfway up the rails.

Which Craftsman Models This Applies To

Craftsman garage doors and openers have been sold through Sears, then Lowe’s, and now through various channels for decades, so the roller spec depends on when your system was built. The pre-2010 steel doors typically used 2-inch diameter rollers with a 7/16-inch stem. Newer Craftsman-branded doors, often manufactured by Clopay or Amarr, may use 2-inch nylon rollers with a shorter 4-inch stem or, on heavier insulated models, 3-inch rollers with ball-bearing construction.

The part number matters less than the measurement. Check the roller stem length, the wheel diameter, and whether your track is standard 2-inch or low-headroom 3-inch radius. We carry both OEM-grade rollers and quality aftermarket equivalents from DURA-LIFT and National. For most Van Nuys homes built in the 1970s and 1980s, we find the aftermarket sealed-bearing nylon roller outlasts the original steel roller, especially with the fine dust that blows in from the Sepulveda Basin area. Mainspring Garage Door Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Craftsman or its parent company.

Signs Your Craftsman Roller Replacement Is Failing

  • The door grinds or squeals during opening or closing. This usually means the roller bearings have dried out or the nylon wheel has worn flat against the steel stem. In Van Nuys, where summer temperatures spike past 100 degrees, the factory grease breaks down faster than in coastal zones.
  • The door jerks or catches at the same spot every cycle. A single seized roller creates a flat spot on the wheel, causing the door to hesitate as that roller tries to climb the track curve. Left alone, it will chew a groove in the track itself.
  • Visible wobble or tilt in the door as it moves. When rollers wear unevenly, the door panel twists slightly in the frame. This puts stress on the hinges and can pull the door out of plumb over time.
  • Roller stems are bent or the roller has popped out of the track. This often follows a hard impact, like backing into the door, but it can also happen when a worn roller binds and the opener forces the door through anyway. The opener doesn’t know the difference; it just pulls until something gives.
  • The door feels heavier than it used to. Worn rollers increase friction in the track system, which makes the door harder to lift manually and strains the opener motor. If your Craftsman opener is working harder and sounding louder, the rollers are the first place to look.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Roller Replacement (per door, 10-12 rollers) $110-$220
Track inspection & lubrication Included
Hinge inspection & torque check Included

The $110 end covers a standard 16×7 door with basic steel rollers swapped for sealed nylon. The $220 end applies to heavier doors, ball-bearing rollers, or jobs where we find bent stems or damaged tracks that need attention at the same time. We state the flat price before any work begins. The parts, labor, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise are all included in that number. No surprises on the bill.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect your own rollers. With the door closed and the opener disconnected, look for cracked wheels, bent stems, or rollers that don’t spin freely by hand. What you should not do is remove a roller while the door is under tension. The bottom roller bracket is attached to the lift cable, which is under significant load even when the door is down. If that bracket comes loose, the cable can unwind with force. We’ve seen injuries from this in Van Nuys garages, and it’s not worth the risk to save a service call.

We carry Craftsman-compatible rollers on every truck, and most replacements are done in a single visit. Call (747) 836-1998 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether it’s a roller issue or something deeper. The door should open. Let’s make sure it does.
