Our Van Nuys crew is the same group you’ll see on every job, not a rotating cast of subcontractors. We’ve worked together long enough to know who handles the sticky torsion springs and who stays calm when a customer’s opener dies at 11 p.m. on a Saturday. What ties us together is the K.E.Y.S. code we train under: Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it. Carl Dutton started this operation in 1984, and he still hires for character over flash.

Carl Dutton, Owner
Carl opened Mainspring Garage Door Co. in 1984, naming it for the coiled spring that carries a door’s full weight, the part most people never think about until it snaps. He spent his first fifteen years in the field, replacing springs in Valley garages during the July heat and crawling under jammed doors in Encino carports when the rains came. These days he runs dispatch, answers the overnight calls himself, and still drives out to jobs that have gone sideways. Carl’s the one who writes the 90-Day Done Right Promise on every invoice by hand. He’ll tell you he’s seen doors that should have been replaced three springs ago, but he’ll quote you a flat price and stick to it.
Marcus T., Lead Technician
Marcus has been with us since 2011, and he’s the technician other crews call when a torsion spring setup doesn’t match the manufacturer’s specs. He’s factory-certified on LiftMaster and Genie openers, but his real specialty is diagnosing what the homeowner actually needs versus what they’re being sold. Last winter he caught a cracked drum on a Sherman Oaks door that another company had quoted for full replacement. Marcus lives in North Hollywood with two rescue dogs and a garage full of vintage motorcycle parts he claims he’ll restore someday.
Elena R., Senior Installer
Elena joined Mainspring in 2016 after eight years installing commercial roll-up doors in Burbank industrial parks. She handles our new door and replacement jobs across Van Nuys, Panorama City, and Studio City, and she’s particularly sharp on Clopay and Amarr insulated models, which matter more than people realize when a west-facing garage hits 110 degrees in August. Elena measures twice, carries her own laser level, and has a running bet with Marcus about which Valley neighborhood has the most uneven concrete slabs. She coaches youth soccer in Lake Balboa on weekends.
Darnell K., Service Coordinator
Darnell is the live voice answering when you call (747) 836-1998 at 2 a.m. because your door won’t close and you’re not sure if the garage is secure. He’s been with us since 2019, and he knows which trucks carry which springs, which technician is closest to your neighborhood, and whether your oddball Raynor opener from 2003 is worth fixing or replacing. Darnell grew up in Pacoima, still lives there, and can describe most Valley neighborhood street patterns from memory. He keeps a handwritten log of repeat part numbers that predates our computer system.
Jesse V., Apprentice Technician
Jesse started in 2022, fresh from a trade program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and he’s been riding with Marcus and Elena to learn the difference between book knowledge and what a forty-year-old track actually does. He’s already certified on cable and roller replacement, and he’s working toward his torsion spring qualification, which Carl doesn’t hand out until someone’s done fifty supervised jobs without a callback. Jesse grew up in a Van Nuys apartment with no garage, which he says made him oddly obsessed with how they work. He lives in Valley Glen now, finally has a garage, and his own door squeaks, which Marcus never lets him forget.
One Standard, Every Job
Every person on this page answers to the same standard Carl set in 1984. The 90-Day Done Right Promise applies whether Marcus is swapping a spring on a Saturday night or Elena is measuring a full replacement in Tarzana. Our trucks carry the parts so we finish in one visit. The price we state before we start is the price on the invoice. Background checks and uniforms aren’t optional, and neither is the K.E.Y.S. code. We’ve turned down technicians with perfect technical scores who didn’t treat the customer’s home like their own. That’s how we’ve kept a square deal in Van Nuys for over four decades.
