Wayne Dalton Cable & Drum Replacement: The Van Nuys Owner’s Guide

Wayne Dalton cable and drum replacement in Van Nuys typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we stock the common TorqueMaster and standard-lift configurations on our trucks for same-day completion. Most Wayne Dalton doors in the Valley use a 1/8-inch or 5/32-inch aircraft-grade cable paired with either a cast-aluminum or steel-lift drum, depending on door height and track radius. If your door is hanging crooked, dropping fast, or making that unmistakable grinding rattle when it closes, the cable or drum is usually the culprit.

We’ve replaced more of these than we can count in Van Nuys, from the ranch-style homes near Van Nuys Airport to the post-war tract houses south of Victory Boulevard. The dry Santa Ana cycles and summer heat spikes here accelerate cable fraying, especially on west-facing doors that bake all afternoon. When a cable snaps, the door goes slack on one side, and if the drum is worn, the remaining cable won’t spool clean. That’s when you call.

Which Wayne Dalton Models This Applies To

Wayne Dalton has used three main cable and drum systems over the past thirty years, and getting the match wrong means a door that chatters, binds, or eats its new cables in six months.

TorqueMaster systems (most common on doors from 2000-2015): These use a concealed spring tube with a proprietary drum and a smaller-diameter cable. The drum is stamped with “TM” or “TorqueMaster” and requires a specific winding cone geometry. Aftermarket drums exist, but we’ve found the OEM spec holds alignment better on the 8′ and 9′ wide doors common in Van Nuys.

Standard-lift extension or torsion setups (pre-2000 and post-2015 models): These use industry-standard drums with 12-inch or 18-inch lift, but Wayne Dalton’s cable anchor bracket often sits at a slightly different angle than Clopay or Amarr. We measure drum diameter, cable length to the anchor, and track radius before quoting.

How to identify yours: Check the sticker on the inside top panel for model numbers like 9100, 9600, 9700, or 9800. TorqueMaster doors have a long metal tube above the door rather than exposed torsion springs. If you’re unsure, snap a photo of the drum end and the cable path. We’ll tell you exactly what you need before we drive out.

Mainspring Garage Door Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Wayne Dalton. We source OEM and quality aftermarket equivalents based on what fits and lasts, not brand loyalty.

Signs Your Wayne Dalton Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door hangs crooked or one side drops faster. When one cable frays or a drum develops a flat spot, the lift becomes uneven. The door tilts in the track, and the rollers on the low side start binding against the jamb. In Van Nuys, we see this most often on 16-foot wide doors where the extra weight accelerates drum wear.
  • Grinding or clicking when the door moves, especially near the top. A cracked drum flange lets the cable slip and catch, producing that rhythmic click. The grinding usually means the drum bore is wallowed out and spinning eccentrically on the shaft.
  • Visible fraying, rust spots, or broken strands on the cable. Aircraft cables don’t fail all at once. They fray from the outside in, and once you see three or more broken strands in a six-inch run, the remaining strength drops fast. Valley humidity swings after rare rains kick the rust cycle into gear.
  • The cable has come off the drum and is dangling loose. This happens when a worn drum loses its proper pitch or the cable was incorrectly spooled after a previous repair. It’s not a re-wind job; the drum needs inspection for groove damage.
  • The door feels heavier than usual or the opener strains. A slipping drum doesn’t transfer full lift force. The opener works harder, the motor overheats, and if you have a chain-drive unit, you’ll hear the slack slap. We check drum grip as part of every service call.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Van Nuys Price Range
Wayne Dalton cable replacement (single) $130-$190
Wayne Dalton cable replacement (pair) $180-$250
Drum replacement (per drum, with cable) $160-$250
Cable & drum set, both sides $220-$340

What drives the range: door width (wider doors need longer cables and more labor), whether the drum is OEM or quality aftermarket, and whether we find secondary issues like worn bearings or a bent shaft. We state the flat price before touching a tool. No surprises on the bill.

Every cable and drum replacement carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it doesn’t run true, we come back. No paperwork to file, no argument. We also carry springs, openers, and hardware for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie systems on the same truck, so if your Wayne Dalton door has multiple issues, we handle them in one visit.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: look for frayed cables, listen for grinding, and watch whether the door stays level as it rises. If the cable is off the drum but intact, do not attempt to re-spool it with the door loaded. Wayne Dalton cables, especially on TorqueMaster systems, carry significant residual tension even when the door is down. A slipping wrench or miscounted turn can release that energy without warning.

We’ve been called to Van Nuys homes where a well-meaning owner tried to save a hundred bucks and ended up with a bent track, a damaged panel, or worse. The cable and drum sit at the intersection of weight, tension, and geometry. It’s not a job for general hand tools and a YouTube video.

Carl Dutton learned the hard way, early in his training at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, that springs and cables don’t forgive shortcuts. That lesson still guides how we quote and how we work.
